Reasons to Hope - Vol. 3

We’re back with another rendition of reasons to hope. This edition has got us feeling really optimistic for the future. We’re extremely grateful for the conservational efforts of our fellow Australians and eco-warriors around the world…Like you!

  • Auskelp has proposed to build a Golden Kelp farm at Disaster Bay, south of Eden. The kelp farm would provide feed for livestock, fertiliser and the potential development of kelp based biofuels. The farm creates conditions in which marine life thrives while benefiting the planet: a 200-hectare seaweed farm would cut 3,600 tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere every year. The average Australian uses 20 tonnes of carbon per year, therefore just one “rainforest of the ocean” would offset the carbon output of 180 people. It will be the first commercial seaweed farm in Australia.

  • Phillip Island's little penguins set a record as 5,000 of them crossed the beach in a 'really unique' event. This is partly due to conservation efforts, as well as ‘excellent feeding conditions’ because of La Niña.

  • The Reef Restoration Foundation has been establishing a series of offshore coral nurseries throughout the Great Barrier Reef. After 6-12 months, they will then attach coral fragments back to a reef to regenerate damaged sections.

  • Chitofoam is a bioplastic version of polystyrene foam invented by Charlotte Böhning and Mary Lempres of Doppelgänger. It is made from the exoskeleton of mealworms and breaks down in the soil in a couple of weeks.

We hope this has made your day a little bit brighter.
