Reasons to Hope - Vol. 1

At the moment, it’s hard to look on the bright side when it comes to climate change. Inspired by 2040, A Handbook for the Regeneration by Damon Gameau, we’re continuing on “Reasons to Hope”

Here is a list of cool projects happening locally and definitely going in the right direction.

  1. Sydney is the first city in the world to filter and monitor microplastics in the water 24/7.

Sydney is the first pilot city to trial Seabin’s technology for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for 12 months at Pyrmont Waterfront. The seabin is a floating unit designed to catch floating garbage on the surface of water bodies such as Marinas and Ports. It  intercept microplastics, absorb petroleum based surface oils and clean the water from contaminated organic materials.

  2. The NSW Government is trialling Solar Gardens.
The NSW Government is supporting three solar garden trials in Blacktown, Shoalhaven and Byron Bay.
A ‘solar garden’ is a farm that is shared between households. The household can buy shares in the solar garden and receive credit on their electricity bills. This could be a great solution for the 30% of Australians who are unable to install solar on their homes, like people in apartments, rentals or low income housing.

  3. Sydney Markets recycles 70% of all waste on site.
After the morning trade is over, the leftover inedible produce is brought to the Green Point to be stored in a tank that works like a stomach. The methane created from the one tank produces enough energy to power 1500-3200 houses a year.

  4. City of Sydney is powered using 100% renewable energy.
Using wind and solar farms in Regional NSW, streetlights, pools, sports fields, buildings and the Sydney Town Hall all use locally sourced clean energy. This will reduce carbon emissions by 20,000 tonnes a year, the power used by 6000 households.

Stay tuned for more good news updates!
