Reasons to Hope - Vol. 2

  • Humpback whales are no longer endangered. The mammals have made a major recovery since whaling had largely ended in the 1980s. 30 years ago there were fewer than 300 whales and now there are more than 35,000 in the southern hemisphere.

Each year from May to November, Southern Hemisphere humpback whales migrate along the eastern coast line each winter to the Great Barrier Reef to mate and give birth in warm waters.

  • The White Peach Surplus Sour by @LocalBrewingau is the new craft beer sold at Liquorland and First Choice Liquor brewed using unsold supermarket bread and excess white peaches. This range can close the loop on leftover fresh produce and open up a new avenue for fruit growers.

  • 16 suburban Sydney councils use recycled glass to make sand for local roads and footpaths. By recycling kerbside glass bottles, we create a closed loop market. Australian companies like Enviro Sand use 100% recycled glass for the construction industry, providing a sustainable alternative to virgin sand mining.

  • The Ocean Voyage Institute gives fishermen GPS trackers to place inside floating garbage piles so that the OVI can remove them. They have set a world record for removing over 170 tons of plastic debris from the ocean.
