Australia's massive food waste problem

As Aussies Christmas is all about sunshine, loved ones and way too much food! But amidst the joy, we are wasting a LOT of food. The government reports that Aussie households waste a whopping 7.6 million tonnes of food every year—and a chunk of that comes from the silly season.

Here are practical ways to reduce food waste this holiday season (and save money!)

Shop savvy: Plan your menu and stick to a list so you don’t overbuy. Bonus points for buying local and seasonal produce! Keep your eyes peeled for fancy Christmas packaging. It might look pretty but often the food inside is the same, however the price is much higher!

Share the feast

Encourage your guests to take home leftovers (don’t forget to save some for yourself!)

Portion control: Use an online portion calculator to make sure you’ve prepping the right amount of food for your guests (and not overdoing it!).

Freeze like a pro: Got more leftovers than you can handle? Freeze them! Many Christmas dishes will freeze well for future meals.

Donate away: If you do find yourself with left over food, there’s tons of Aussie charities you can donate food too. Be aware that most can’t accept any food donations involving alcohol (even trace amounts). At RecycleSmart all our food donations go to OzHarvest.

This month at RecycleSmart, we took a visit to OzHarvest headquarters in Sydney! is Australia's leading food rescue organisation. They were kind enough to share some fantastic tips on reducing food waste, check it out HERE (and don’t forget to give us a follow while you’re at it..)
