How we’re saving the turtles this World Turtle Day

Sea Turtles have become the “poster boys” for the war against waste given their vulnerability in the face of plastic pollution in our oceans. Whether you’re sick of seeing sea turtles everywhere or are still absolutely obsessed with them (as we are), the hard facts are, soft plastics are harming these beautiful creatures, and we need to take action.

Unfortunately, it is estimated that more than 100 million marine animals die each year as a result of eating or getting entangled in plastic. Soft plastic bags are mistaken for tasty jellyfish and are consumed by sea turtles which affect their health in two ways:

  1. The sensation of being full reduces their motivation to eat, leading to death by starvation.

  2. Gut punctures and digestive issues, with research studies suggesting that one piece of plastic alone can kill turtles.

Now, these are pretty grim statistics, but there is light at the end of the tunnel…

What can we do?

There are thousands of organisations working towards the protection and conservation of our marine life and particularly, our sea turtles. One such organisation, that RecycleSmart is so happy to be working with, is SEE Turtles! SEE Turtles protects endangered sea turtles around the world by supporting community-based conservation efforts.

For World Turtle Day this May, we have decided to symbolically adopt a baby Sea Turtle for every single Power Pickup booked by our audience this whole month!

This means that you can book a Power Pickup for all your soft plastics to ensure that it never ends up in a turtle's stomach, whilst simultaneously contributing to the protection of baby sea turtles in our oceans!

The end

Thanks to our amazing users we were able to symbolically adopt 1,110 baby turtles!
